in consequence of the missive, I would like to keep an eye on what Catherine read..., penned by Adrian
No mention of reading. From Ch. 14 Catherine mentions some of the landscape description from the early sections of Udolpho. When asked by Eleanor about her reading preference, Catherine answers, “To say the truth, I do not much like any other.” Of course, she does not say she has finished Udolpho or read any other books like Udolpho. But then Catherine does talk about her further reading: “That is, I can read poetry and plays, and things of that sort, and do not dislike travels. But history, real solemn history, I cannot be interested in.” This appears to address a question about whether Catherine garnered quotes mentioned in Chapter 1 from extracts of picked out of whole plays. At least some of Catherine’s quotes could have come from plays or poems she had read, since she admits to reading plays and poetry. She has also, apparently, read some history, if only under compulsion. Catherine also, apparently, keeps track of upcoming releases, as her “something very shocking indeed will soon come out of London” indicates. Because the source is “A particular friend of mine had an account of it in a letter from London yesterday. …” the source is almost certainly Isabella and some friend of hers in London. From Ch. 15 No mention of reading.
