Ch.6 L&T question: What was a pocketbook in JA's time?   Written by Line (3/7/2009 10:30 a.m.)
Are you new?

In ch.6, Isabella tells Catherine that she has a list of novels in her pocketbook. Would she have meant the same thing we do today - a rectangular purse or handbag made of leather, possibly with more than one compartment, and probably with metal snaps, or would she have meant a drawstring bag (or something else)? How big would it have been compared to today's handbags, and how would she have carried it? Thanks in advance for any help!
