Are you new?

Really plain thing struck me when reading Chapter 5, in that novels considered to be of good quality are compared with those that are only meant to excite and sensationalize. When you mention the bit about watching daytime dramas I thought of bodice rippers (Harlequin) romances and how The Monk or The Mysteries of Udolpho might be considered along those lines.
