... that guides me here, rather than Catherine's impression of Thorpe. As I mentioned earlier, I think JA is using the defense of novels to show us something about her characters. Thus, JA says novels are good and anyone who disclaims interest in them as a genre is a fool. Thorpe denigrates them, therefore she's setting him up as a fool. At least, that's what I think is going on in chapter 7.
