Mrs Morland and novels   Written by kathleen (elder) (3/3/2009 8:11 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I like that description as well..., penned by Lynn
Are you new?

In Chapter 6, Isabella & Catherine are discussing Udolpho. They have the following exchange:

“It is so odd to me, that you should never have read Udolpho before; but I suppose Mrs. Morland objects to novels.”

“No, she does not. She very often reads Sir Charles Grandison herself; but new books do not fall in our way.”

I love this bit about Mrs Morland often reading (re-reading, I suppose) Sir Charles Grandison, which is (iirc) a very long book. As busy as Mrs Morland must be, what with 10 children and all, it's a good sign that she finds time to read at least one novel. :-)
