P.S: More evidence that this may have been a school text   Written by Line (3/3/2009 2:50 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Did Catherine memorize this for fun?, penned by Line
Are you new?

As I was going through the poem, the first two lines of verse 5 sounded very familiar, and it turns out that Mrs. Elton quotes them in ch.52 of "Emma". To me, this seems like good evidence that the poem was well-known at the time (or else JA was being lazy?), and Mrs. Elton doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would memorize any poems she didn't have to!

(Actually, after writing this, I recollected that the RoP has its own Literary Companion, put together by Barbara, which I'd never really looked at before, and lo and behold, THaMF is mentioned there! It's on Pemberley's home page, near the bottom. Click on "Links to literature mentioned in
Jane Austen's novels and film adaptations" under Jane Austen Links, on the left.)
