John Thorpe is shown in the disagreeable light by JA's novel apologetic by basically doing what she was irritated with other novel heroines for doing! He acts like it's embarrassing to ever read them! (Of course he then turns all his words back on themselves and ties them around his feet to stumble over - but that's a different subject!;)
