...only plenty of tragedies and suffering. On the other hand, Sophie from Tom Jones does have faults, but Tom Jones is not a Gothic novel (although Sophie is the one who raises the injured bird--LOL).
Catherine is clearly more an Austen heroine than she will ever be a Gothic heroine. This is an interesting premise, of course, since NA was written before most (if not all) of the JA novels (and their heroines) that have become so familiar to us.
