"as soon as I heard she had married an emigrant, I was sure I should never be able to get through it."

Is this saying he would not read it BECAUSE she married an emigrant or did that give him some clue as to the type of book it was. We all have our "filters" so maybe he had read something else that was written by an emigrant (or spouse) that he really disliked causing him to paint all books with the same brush so to speak.
