I think you're right   Written by JoAnn (3/2/2009 3:50 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Who Wants to be a Gothic Heroine?, penned by nan duval
Are you new?

So far, she seems to be content just being herself, wanting to make friends, and wanting to do right by the friends that she has. I'm trying, as I read, to separate out what might be Catherine's actual perspective vs. the narrator's commentary, and so far I think all of the suggestions relating Catherine to a heroine are the narrator's, not hers.

But does any real heroine ever perceive herself as such at the time?
