You have gone to a deeper level of understanding these passages, which shows perhaps that John Thorpe is merely being fashinable in his comments on Burney's publications.

I took the juxtaposition of the novel apologetic and Thorpe's comments on a more surface level: JA admires novels; Thorpe denigrates them; therefore, we are being told obliquely, Thorpe is not to be admired.
