FOCUS: What Catherine Read --from Ch. 5   Written by Adrian (3/2/2009 1:11 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I would like to keep an eye on what Catherine read..., penned by Adrian
Are you new?

In her defense of the novel, in Ch. 5, JA mentions...

  • History of England (or any of several abridgments)
  • Extracts of Milton, Pope, Prior
  • The Spectator
  • Cecillia (by Fanny Burney)
  • Camilla (by Fanny Burney)
  • Belinda (by Maria Edgeworth)
  • Of course we have no suggestion that Catherine read any of these (in view of her difficulty getting "new books" at Fullerton), and Catherine specifically tells John Thorpe in Chapter 7 that she has not read Camilla, although she clearly recognized it from his description. That suggests she has heard about these books even if she has not read them (and has done a better job listening to others describe them than John Thorpe has--LOL).

Of course The Spectator is just what the non-studious Catherine would likely not read. The Extracts, however, might have provided materials such as the quotations found in Chapter 1. These two items are, of course, not ones JA used in defense of her own position.
