FOCUS: What Catherine Read --from Ch. 3   Written by Adrian (3/2/2009 1:01 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I would like to keep an eye on what Catherine read..., penned by Adrian
Are you new?

At the end of Chapter 3, when talking about Catherine's right to dream about her evening with Henry Tilney, JA writes...

...a celebrated writer has maintained, that no young lady can be justified in falling in love before the gentleman’s love is declared…"

which is from Samuel Richardson’s essay published in 1751 in the twice-weekly periodical The Rambler (20 March 1750–14 March 1752)
“That a young lady should be in love, and the love of the young gentleman undeclared, is an heterodoxy which prudence, and even policy, must not allow.”

But of course, there is no indication that Catherine ever read the article, nor does her attitude towards studying in general make it likely that she would have read it. So I assume it was just something she heard passed around as a maxim.
