It makes me see Catherine like a real little girl, doing the sorts of things that a real little girl in a large family living in the country would do for amusement.

One of the many lovely things about NA are these homey details--which sometimes involve domestic animals-- of everyday life, in the midst of how arch and over-the-top it can get. It grounds the characters.
