... or pattens, which as you can see from this picture of 19th C pattens, are basically the same thing. These would be worn either over regular shoes or instead of them (depending upon the design of the patten) to protect the feet from mud and muck.


Here is a painting from Mrs. Hurst Dancing of the family on the way to a dinner party. As you can see, they are carrying their good shoes and wearing what appears to be clogs or pattens, except for the middle lady, who seems to be wearing boots.
