Are you new?

I've never read this as rude either. To me Henry recognizes what type of woman Mrs. Allen is (she is the one, after all, that brings up the price of her dress without anyone saying anything about it) and responds as he enjoys responding to people - laughing on the inside while appearing pleasant and kind on the outside. To me, rudeness causes the other person to feel slighted, uncomfortable or embarrassed.
