(can men be catty?) but then he goes on to say that he got a "prodigious bargin" for five shillings. Is he implying that Mrs. Allen overpaid or (gasp) paid full retail?

Either way it did seem a rude comment to me but maybe that is the norm for fops and dandies of the day. Everything is a joke.

I get the impression that Mrs. Allen is somewhat obtuse and didn't understand that the whole conversation was a joke to Mr. Tilney.
