I agree, I think we are seeing how easily someone who is inexperienced and impressionable can be led astray by the wrong people. If James had made friends with someone like Henry instead of John, and since James appears to be a follower who goes along with his friends, he would have been a different person by the end of the story. But he's not, and that's just the way he is.

I'm sure he will grow from the experience. John probably won't 'hang out' with him anymore, anyway, after all that has happened. I imagine him telling everyone he knows what a fool James is. I hope James finds some better friends. I feel very sorry for him.
