so I am wondering if JA wanted to laugh at it, or just show us Mrs. Morland's reading habits.

The two young girls seem to talk like Isabella or even Mrs. Elton or perhaps Caroline Bingley, so I think JA must be laughing at the behaviour of the girls rather than the father.
I don't know, maybe I am way off the mark.
