I think the food may have been on a sideboard, though even if it was on the table he would have been able to help her fill her plate. Remember the french bread that Mrs Morland was upset about her mentioning? Don't have the text on me to refer to so can't be specific, there were types of meat and of course the ever present tea (and possibly (hot) chocolate - I think I read that in this novel).
