Note that I put "normal" in quotes, because being such a fan of Da Man, I can't consider him "normal" in the sense of "run-of-the-mill"! :-)

But yes, the "normal" as in "plausible" love story of H. and C. is, I think, intended to serve as part of the "parody" aspect of the novel, contrasting with the "trial by fire and water" that the hero and heroine of Gothic novels have to go through (not to mention giant murderous headgear, gargantuan feet, and the other perils of Otranto!).
