I find the picture interesting, because if I've judged it correctly, several old houses of mine have Rumfords, and I never knew that that's what it was. In fact, a lot of the housing in my city (Melbourne) was built in the Victorian era, and still have their Rumford fireplaces remaining. Of course, these days, they're largely ornamental. Must have been just the thing for a modern, efficient General back in the day.
