John Thorpe   Written by Maisy (4/19/2006 4:53 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, John 'hears' only what he wants., penned by MandyN
Are you new?

John Thorpe reminds me of a few baseball fans I've encountered over the years. After every pitch, they yell out "ball" or "strike" (whichever is beneficial to their own team) and if the umpire is weak, or wasn't paying attention to the pitch, he'll go along with the what the fan shouted out.

I think that John Thorpe is trying to strong-arm Catherine into marrying him by use of the power of suggestion. He's hoping to intimidate her into accepting this non-proposal. I suppose it's possible that a weak-minded woman might fall for that, but certainly not Catherine Morland! :-)
