Very juicy !   Written by MandyN (4/19/2006 3:06 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, The Pines of Northanger...With apologies to Rhespighi…., penned by JulieW
Are you new?

Goodness, I've heard pineapples were considered as symbols of wealth and status, nt to mention hospitality.
They were even given as presents.

Maybe General Tilney hoped to give Catherine a feeling of luxury and plenty awaiting her at Northanger Abbey.
Well, the pineapples seem quite lost on her !

I've heard pineapples were expensive fruit in the C18th, but I had no real idea about pineries.
Thankyou for all these wonderfully juicy details, Julie.
(I've never heard of pineappple marmalade before.)

Isn't General Tilney a materialistic old snob ;)
