Henry's lectures   Written by Deborah Y (4/17/2006 9:18 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, So far I'm not keen on Henry..., penned by Suzanne
Are you new?

Though I find Henry's wit and humor charming, I agree with Suzanne that there's a side of Henry that is less attractive and can sometimes come off as quite condescending. I wonder, for example, what we're supposed to make of passages like the one at the end of this week's section, where Henry is lecturing Catherine about her foolish misapprehensions concerning the General: all that stuff about how such things don't go on in Christian countries is either insufferably patronizing or acutely ironic (on JA's part, if not on Henry's). I don't want to get spoilerish so I can't go much further with this -- but we should return to this speech once we've finished the book and see what we think about Henry then. . .
