It's so true that there aren't any other JA heroes who make this kind of effort - at least, not so much by words (Mr. Knightley even says that if he loved Emma less he could talk about it more!) And it's not just "sustained flights of satirical imagination," as you so succinctly put it, there's really a lack of sustained talking in the other novels! Catherine is a talker, and Henry is showing her that he enjoys her company and conversation. And yes, he's making fun of her a little bit, but in the same vein as he would Eleanor - which we know from Nicki's excellent summations to be gentle jabs without being truly cruel.
