Why were the Tilneys out of spirits when CM dined with them...   Written by Emmy (4/16/2006 12:23 p.m.)
Are you new?

I have puzzled over this repeatedly. I was concerned perhaps that John Thorpe had let something slip to the General about him meaning to propose (incidentally, only such a rattle as JT could consider that as a proposal!) and that the Tilneys were disappointed by such news. Did I miss something? Or shall it be explained later (first time reading NA).
