On the surface, it seems shallow, as if Catherine is only interested in what concerns her. But isn't that what history is about? Learning how people like ourselves lived, so that we can benefit from their experience?

By the same token, the story about Catherine seems fairly mundane compared to that of the gothic novels, but it's more relevant to us because this could be our story too.

Catherine's comments are similar to another JA heroine who comments about the pen being in the man's hand.
