It's helpful if you begin by reading the last 5-6 paragraphs of chapter 5.

Indiana has looks, and knows how to use them, but she knows even better how to use the unfailing powers of her governess, Miss Margland! (who is thus described: "The spirit of Miss Margland was as haughty as her intellects were weak" [ch. 5]).

Just read what Miss Margland says on the subject of Indiana's education! ;o)
