Isn't this exactly what Henry was laughing at on his first meeting with Catherine at the lower rooms, when he simpers with affectation, and asks her those routine questions about Bath.

Here too their characters show a difference.
Henry instantly at ease and friendly while Eleanor has to go through the routine stuff to keep up conversation.
