I have to wonder about him being so friendly with John Thorpe. A rattle, indeed. I have to question James's mental acuity if he can stand to be around him very much (which it appears that he has been). I presume he was friends with JT first, and then met Isabella when he spent Christmas holiday with the family, not the other way around (befriending dolt JT because JM was smitten with IT).
