... for John to be proposing to Catherine. They haven't known each other that long. As for James needing the trip to propose to Isabella, there are plenty of other opportunities. All he needs is to take Isabella on a secluded walk somewhere in Bath. Or even simply rock up to the Thorpe residence. I'm sure once Mrs Thorpe got whiff of what was going on, she and the girls would suddenly be 'needed upstairs'
