Thankyou Maisy, I checked out your interesting posts.

There is indeed something distasteful in Thorpe mentioning The Monk and Tom Jones to Catherine.

Interesting to read JA read Fielding and Richardson with gusto.
So I find it difficult to believe NA is simply a satire on books as an end in iteself.

JA wouldn't approve of charecters like John either.
I go along with your idea JA used these books to make a statement on John's charecter, 'his bawdiness'; not to mention his tastes and possible attitude to women.
