were at, this time ,people who stood around the edge of the seats in the pit,Mandy.

In some theatres this was a special sort of lower "trough".

I've linked a post from the Special Topic on JA and the Theatre which might help explain the situation better.....

And I'm qutie, quite sure Mr Tilneys eye sight was perfect and he registedred Catherien's persence almost as soon as she noticed his:... I was being ironic with the wording of my header...
