It's comforting, for want of a better word to know that some things, like student alchoholism, never change. Goodness knows I drank a lot when I was a student. Then again, John Thorpe is a lot more obnoxious than your average student. James' behaviour can be put down to immaturity. John's behaviour is to an extent that it can't really be blamed on that alone.
