Are you new?

Something in the very first paragraph struck me as strange. Mr. Morland is described as "a very respectable man, though his name was Richard, and he had never been handsome." Sounds as if JA is comparing him to some famous Richard who was handsome but not respectable. Did anyone else notice this?
