I agree with you, Catherine is simply supposed to be an ordinary girl without any exceptional talents. Isn't that part of the point of this novel? The "standard gothic heroine" isn't very realistic; she is extraordinarily gifted to the point of improbability. That's why Catherine's an "anti-heroine." :-)
