On the topic of Catherine and Isabella using first names - I got the distinct feeling that JA was using the fact that they got on a first-name basis so early in their relationship to mock their "affection" for each other (or maybe not mock so much as just to show us that all is not as it should be where Isabella is concerned). In general, I think most of JA's books seems to frown on such free manners (I'm thinking specifically of "Mr. E" and "Knightly" in Emma). Did anyone else get that same idea from this?
I agree about the desire of teenagers to change/modify their names to sound more grown up (or whatever their goal is) - I taught high school for several years and was always amazed at some of the changes those kids could come up with - quite creative!
