Other female JA characters who go by diminutive versions of their names are Nancy (Anne) Steele, Kitty (Catherine or Katherine) Bennet, Lizzie/Eliza (Elizabeth) Bennet, Fanny (Frances) Price, and Hetty (Harriet?) Bates. One of John and Isabella Knightley's children is called Bella, which is probably short for Isabella.
Some have never altered their names. I really can't imagine a 'Nancy' Elliot or a 'Lizzie' Elliot. There doesn't seem to be a short version of names like Mary or Charlotte.
Some don't mind continuing to go by their nicknames with family members and friends.
My impresson here is that Sarah Morland, who had always been called Sally before then, informed everyone that she wanted to be called Sarah in order to seem more grown up and more 'genteel'. Maybe Catherine went by Cathy or some other nickname at home.
