At this point in the book it may be to early to call her shallow. She did just meet Caterine and they are both on vacation chasing after husbands and enjoying themselves so what better topic of discussion than men and balls and books they like. I think it is too early in their relationship to share any really deep intimacies especially considering how shy Catherine is.
