Pennie posted earlier that JA does an excellent job of telling about action...this is such a wonderful example of her ability to combine showing and telling with such wonderful choice of words - she's just telling us about our heroine making her way across a ball room, but at the same time painting so vivid a picture I can already feel my toes throb and my face flush with heat of so many people crammed in together.

I also like Martha Grace's thought putting this assembly in place with the Gothic-satire motif - thinking about in that life makes me chuckle even more at this scene now.
