There is a footnote in my edition that says base ball was a game similar to Rounders.

Rounders seems to be an older game from which modern American baseball evolved. I've linked a Wikipedia article about the game.

But, yes, on the whole it seems to be similar to baseball. It's hard to imagine most Austen heroines playing such a game. But I can see Catherine taking part.
