I've no quarrel with attributing this description of Bath to JA's personal feelings, but isn't it also the kind of language one hopes to read in a Gothic novel? I mean, if there were dragons, or hoardes of invaders, or something, she could talk about that. Instead, she has to attribute Gothic peril to the assembly at Bath.
