On the other hand, you are reading NA   Written by Tracy W (4/2/2006 8:13 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Novels in their time, penned by MaryAnn K.
Are you new?

On the other hand, you are reading Northanger Abbey, a novel set in a time quite unlike your own.

Back in Regency England, travel was very expensive and time-consuming, and there was no TV or radio. Reading was one of the few ways to learn about the outside world and people beyond your own family. Perhaps it was the lack of an opportunity to widen poeple's horizons that the reviewer deplored.

I like being able to read both sorts of novels, and I find JA's realism very informative about a different culture, but I know people who are as firmly against "escapism" as the 1818 reviewer appears to be for it.
