I think it is another contrast to the gothic novel—where the dramatic explaining of how treacherous people (attorneys and lords) took advantage of or ignored a hapless widow and her particular tragedies, etc. and taking many chapters to do it too. :D Mrs. Thorpe only has her children to lord over Mrs. Allen, thank goodness. :D
