Are you new?

Catherine is only 17, and I don't think Regency-ites(?) were quite so obsessed with husband-hunting (Mrs. Bennet notwithstanding!) as we might think. I think Mrs. Allen would be considered to have done her duty if her charge merely stayed safe, met some new people, saw some new things and generally gained a bit more experience in society.
