A cruel assessment? (and a vocabulary question)   Written by Line (4/2/2006 9:55 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, CM LD? (longish), penned by Katy B
Are you new?

I don't think the first part of that description is cruel at all, just poking fun at novel heroines.

She never could learn or understand anything before she was taught, and sometimes not even then, for she was often inattentive, and occasionally stupid.

How many of us can learn something *before* we are taught? I don't know, but I get the feeling that "proper" heroines were supposed to be so naturally talented that they learned almost by ESP! Also, I think "stupid" didn't mean exactly the same thing in JA's time as it does now, but I'd need someone with a contemporary dictionary to help me out!
