I'm not sure if one...   Written by Reeba (4/2/2006 9:02 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, A list of the characteristics of a Gothic heroine, penned by Kathi

can apply directly opposite characteristics in all cases.

For instance;
The fathers in the two gothic novels I've read are absolutely superb. Educating their daughters in all that is important in education and love their daughters a lot.

The locking up could refer to Montoni in 'Udolpho' where he confined Emily, his niece to one part of the castle and actually had his wife (Emily's aunt) locked up.

Unless I have missed a novel with such a father.

The other points are good ones.
The parting between Madeline and her father in 'Clermont' is quite the opposite of that in NA.
