I think this is another parody on the age at which the gothic heroines became so well accomplished.

'Udolpho' is full of this 'early' years' of Emily when;
She had discovered in her early years uncommon delicacy of mind.

She discovered in her early years a taste for works of genius.

'Youth and inexperience' as you have given the title to your post, Pennie, is so apt, I think.
