' Heroic' poets.   Written by MandyN (4/1/2006 1:06 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Quotations, especially Shakespeare, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I believe at least two of these poets, Thomas Grey and Pope wrote 'heroic' poetry. Grey wrote heroic couplets which may have appealed to a heroine in training.
I think Pope's first epic poem was the 'Four Pastrols' in 1709 which was probably pretty obsure to most schoolgirls at Catherine's time.
Yet he also wrote a mock-epic poem 'The Dunciad' in the high satircal style of many hack writers who had attacked him in print.

I think Shakespeare or at least some of his plays were learnt by both heroines in Gothic books and ordinary girls like Catherine.
